RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP
Being a responsible owner is not difficult.
You must be aware of your pet’s needs and ensure they do not pose a threat or create a nuisance to the community.
- Ensure your dog is correctly
registered with the City of Bonner Springs and wears it registration tag at all times.
You will be reunited with your pet much faster. VERY IMPORTANT!
- Treat your dog with love and
respect. Take care of them they are dependent on you.
- See that your dog has proper
shelter for inclement weather and extreme temperatures when outside.
- Use a leash when walking you
dog and ensure your dog is under effective control when in a public place.
- Keep your dog within a suitable
enclosure on your property, fenced in or a pen.
- Secure your dog during storms
or when there is likely to be loud noises or extra activity, your dog may get scared. (4th of July especially!)
- Obedience training! This will take a lot of time and patience but will pay off in the end.
- Exercise your dog every day;
they need to work off energy just like kids. Get them toys and spend time with
them. (Backyard exercise is not enough.)
- Make certain that you do not
cause, encourage, or permit your dog to attack or worry another person or animal.
- Supervise all children
and dogs when playing together.
- Ensure your dog is properly
looked after when you are absent or go on vacation.
- If your female comes into
heat it may cause chaos in your area if you do not know how to cope. It is your responsibility to keep her confined. If you
need advice ask your VET.
- Vaccinate your dog and make
sure it receives an annual rabies shot per City Ordinance.
- Make sure your pets receive
all their booster shots. Distemper, hepatitis and parvovirus are killers. Consult your vet.
- Spay and neuter all pets to prevent unwanted animals. Thousands are euthanized
every year.
DON’T’S
- Don’t allow your dog
to be a nuisance. (ie: barking, getting into trash etc.)
- Don’t obtain a dog unless
your property has a suitable enclosure and space.
- Don't obtain a dog if you
don't intend to spend time with it. (ie: walking, playing etc.)
- Don’t allow children
or anyone else to torment your dog. This will make them aggressive.
- Don’t allow your dog
to wander or Run At Large they could get hurt and it is against city ordinance.
